Description

From Miyazaki, this exceptional competition-grade organic houjicha is a rare gem. Using only the stalks of kamairicha (pan-fired tea), this roasted delicacy is Kai san's cherished treasure and showcases the uniqueness of Miyazaki tea.

Tea master Kai san has created an extraordinary blend, bringing together a variety of rare tea cultivars from his fields, such as Kanamidori, Miyamakaori, Yamanami, Takachiho, Harumidori and Saeakari (among others) to create a true piece of art. Some of them are only grown in this part of Japan.

We love NAZUNA's refreshing taste, its outstanding fragrance, its spicy notes and subtle astringency, as well as the red-orange hues of its liquor. A blessing for all five senses!

Did you know?

Roasted in porcelain pot over charcoal, houjicha is made from green tea leaves or stems that have been steamed. Houjicha is still green tea despite its chestnut color that will remind you of black tea. The fermentation process has been stopped, so you benefit from the full power of green tea antioxidants. Super easy to prepare, you simply pour boiling water over it and let it brew for 30 seconds.

The roasting process lowers the caffeine contents of the tea, and so houjicha has next to no bitterness and it can be enjoyed anytime during the day by everyone. Very affordable yet delicious, houjicha is loved by families and tea farmers throughout Japan, especially during meals.

Producer Information

KAI TETSUYA

Isshin En is a small tea plantation nestled in the mountains of Miyazaki, in the southeast of Kyushu island. It was started in 1970 by the first generation of Kai family tea farmers, Isshin Kai, who became interested in tea plantations in the small town of Hinokage.

The fields are scattered over the mountainside at an elevation of 250-330m. A nearby river and their location means the tea trees are exposed to fog and temperature variations that impact their development.

Now, Isshin En is run by Tetsuya Kai, who has followed in his father’s footsteps to produce stunning organic tea in Miyazaki.Organic farming is a passion of Kai san. He studied agriculture at Kyushu University, and is determined to use no industrial fertilizers or pesticides on his fields. Instead, fertilizer is made on-site based on careful measurements made by Kai san.
