Limited edition! Just a few kilos of those teas are made each year, and we have only 40 sets, so enjoy this exclusive treat.

Minamisayaka oolong (orange label): jasmin and honeysuckle scent, sweet, with a clean finish and no bitterness. Refreshing. Typical taste and aroma of its cultivar, Minamisayaka, developed in Miyazaki prefecture.

- Takachiho oolong (green label). Takachiho cultivar is a specialty from Miyazaki prefecture, created in the 1950s, for making kamairicha. Its long and pleasant aftertaste and light astringency make it perfect for oolong tea.

- Fuushun oolong (yellow label). For a tasty, refreshing and fragrant brew, with no umami, and robust levels of caffeine. Cultivar: fuushun

You can prepare up to four brews in a row. Astringency is more pronounced from the second brew, but bitterness is non-existent.

Did you know?

A semi-oxidised tea, Japanese oolong is produced in very low quantities, and is therefore a delicacy. Miyazaki prefecture is one of the last places where organic Japanese oolong tea is made by a handful of specialised tea growers.

Unlike in China or Taiwan, the production of oolong tea has been rare in Japan until somewhat recently. Japanese oolongs tend to be more similar to Taiwanese oolongs than Chinese oolongs. The processing method of oolong sits between black and green tea. With their shorter oxidation period, they have a refreshing flavour that is closer to a green tea but still with some of the creamy, deeper elements of a Chinese oolong or even a black tea. Japanese oolongs have a nuanced and complex flavour profile with gentle sweetness and a lingering finish.

Producer Information

KAI TETSUYA

Isshin En is a small tea plantation nestled in the mountains of Miyazaki, in the southeast of Kyushu island. It was started in 1970 by the first generation of Kai family tea farmers, Isshin Kai, who became interested in tea plantations in the small town of Hinokage.

The fields are scattered over the mountainside at an elevation of 250-330m. A nearby river and their location means the tea trees are exposed to fog and temperature variations that impact their development.

Now, Isshin En is run by Tetsuya Kai, who has followed in his father’s footsteps to produce stunning organic tea in Miyazaki.Organic farming is a passion of Kai san. He studied agriculture at Kyushu University, and is determined to use no industrial fertilizers or pesticides on his fields. Instead, fertilizer is made on-site based on careful measurements made by Kai san.
