Arita Cup "Carp"
Porcelain Sencha Cup
Description
This beautiful cup combines traditional Arita porcelain with a modern design representing a carp painted in gold.
This cup is made following Kinrande Ko-imari style, a porcelain style where gold is applied on the surface and part of the Imari and Arita lineage. This style was already appreciated by European aristocrats in the 18th century.
Nagai Kazumasa, the artist, explains that this is a baroque rococo style of pottery with the type of gorgeous gilded decoration that colored the Renaissance of the Edo Genroku period. In Japan, there is a contrast between the simple beauty of wabi-sabi - a worldview centered on accepting transience and imperfection, prevalent in Japanese art - and the opulent splendor of kabuki theater.
Nagai san explains: "I have tried to bring to life Japan's original opulent energy in my designs. I have tried to come up with a design that is in harmony with modern life, while at the same time passing on tradition".
