HAND-MADE TEAWARE ARITA
Arita-yaki porcelain follows a special technique coming from 400 years of history. The first porcelain made in Japan followed the discovery of porcelain clay near Arita near the end of the 16th century.
From the beginning, Arita saw incredible success and demand from all over Japan for its beautiful porcelain ware. Later, large quantities of Arita porcelain were exported by the Dutch East India Company to European countries and royal families.
In English, “Arita ware” was traditionally used for the export wares in blue and white porcelain, mostly copying Chinese styles. The wares with added overglaze colours were called Imari ware or Kakiemon. “Arita ware” is now more often used as a term for all of them. |
