JUKI - Competition Grade Organic Sencha

Regular price £87.00
/

Description

First flush (shincha 2023)

With only 50kg produced per year, JUKI is Irie san's crown jewel that IKKYU is honored and delighted to propose to our demanding tea lovers.

Notes of persimmon and toasted almond accent the extra sweet and smooth liquor of this extraordinary competition-grade sencha, with hints of steamed bok choy and sweet grass. Its stunning umami leaves a long and delicious round feeling in the mouth.

JUKI comes in 120g in a beautiful lacquered cylinder painted by hand, with delicate gold foils, for the perfect in-season gift. The cylinder is protected by a handmade box made of light and fine-grained paulownia wood.

JUKI, like his little brother JUN, is among the few organic teas grown in the Yame area. This tea is grown at 400 meters above sea level which allows the tea leaves to absorb more nutrients, minerals, and vitamins.

Made in small quantities by a farmer who relies on the sole power of nature, it is an exceptional and rare tea that even our clients in Japan are surprised to discover.

Irie san’s decades of experience producing organic green tea truly shows with this stunning sencha. His tea has passed the most stringent tests, including those set up in Germany.

ARITA - Golden Carp Cup

Regular price £44.00
/

Description

This beautiful cup combines traditional Arita porcelain with a modern design representing a carp painted in gold.

This cup is made following Kinrande Ko-imari style, a porcelain style where gold is applied on the surface and part of the Imari and Arita lineage. This style was already appreciated by European aristocrats in the 18th century.

Nagai Kazumasa, the artist, explains that this is a baroque rococo style of pottery with the type of gorgeous gilded decoration that colored the Renaissance of the Edo Genroku period. In Japan, there is a contrast between the simple beauty of wabi-sabi - a worldview centered on accepting transience and imperfection, prevalent in Japanese art - and the opulent splendor of kabuki theater.

Nagai san explains: "I have tried to bring to life Japan's original opulent energy in my designs. I have tried to come up with a design that is in harmony with modern life, while at the same time passing on tradition".

MOMOTA IKIO - In Blue Matcha Bowl

Regular price £174.00
/

Description

An IKKYU exclusivity!

From the renowned porcelain town of Arita in Saga, this is a unique and beautiful matcha bowl ideal for enjoying with an exquisite flow of blue-white porcelain unique to the artist. Its color will remind you of the sea off the coast of Kyushu island on a summer day.

The sensory contrast between the blue glaze and white foot is extraordinary. The harmony of the partial glaze and the beauty of the blank space gives Momota san’s works a unique charm. Its perfect finish makes it hard to believe that it is handmade. Blue-white porcelain is made using a glaze containing little iron that yields a bluish tint when applied to unglazed pottery.

This technique was originally created in China. Part of the “Blue Sea” collection created exclusively for IKKYU by Momota Aiko san, including a gyokuro cup, a sencha cup and a matcha bowl.

Because of the incredible skills needed to make this beautiful collection, it takes about six to eight weeks to make three bowls. Please contact us to place a pre-order in case of momentary unavailability.

KOHEI - High Grade GABA Green Tea

Sale price £9.00
/

Description

Health-oriented tea KOHEI is an organic green tea grown and processed by Takahashi san in Oita to increase its levels of GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid), a natural component of green tea.

GABA is an inhibitory neurotransmitter also found in human bodies. Its main role is to reduce neuronal excitability. Research has shown that GABA contributes to preventing high blood pressure, helps with sleep disorders, and reduces stress and anxiety.

Thanks to the combination of GABA with other healthy nutrients specific to tea such as l-theanine and other polyphenols, GABA-rich tea has a deeper impact than regular green tea on chronic stress-induced autonomic imbalance, and related risks for cardiovascular disease (see examples of recent studies published here, here and here).

Grown by the producer of our super popular KOJI and KOTARO tamaryokucha, KOHEI greets you with a delicious gingerbread aroma when you first open its bag. Its beautiful pale golden liquor is sweet, refreshing, easy to drink, with hints of cinnamon and citrus notes and leaves a pleasant bitterness on the tongue. Its positive impact on sleep disorders and low levels of caffeine make it a great late afternoon or early evening tea.

Our team fell in love with the cute design of KOHEI's original bag made by Takahashi san and decided to keep it as it is. The drawing represents Takahashi san and his mother who leads family business alongside him, and was based on this photography (see in the picture gallery).

TOMOHA - High Grade Houjicha

Regular price £10.00
/

Description

TOMOHA is an amazing rare treat for all lovers of houjicha and oolong tea. One of our team's new favorite teas from the producer of best-selling TOMOKO kamairicha!

Deep in the mountains of southern Miyazaki prefecture, organic kamairicha and oolong tea master Miyazaki Ryo san created a unique organic houjicha by roasting the stems and leaves of organic oolong tea (a semi-fermented type of tea).

The result is an extraordinary fragrant and comforting delicacy, that combines the roasted notes of houjicha with the pan-fired hints of oolong tea. With nearly no caffeine, enjoy the sweet and bright orange liquor of TOMOHA all day long!

There are different ways of brewing TOMOHA. For the first brew, Miyazaki san suggests using nearly boiling water (95C) for 60 to 90 seconds, and the same temperature for 20-30 seconds the next times.

As for us, we found that using cooler water (75-80C) for 120 seconds without closing the lid on your teapot yielded even more fragrance in our cups. The liquor is maybe less powerful but the floral notes stand out. The second brew is even more sweet than the first with hints of passion fruit.

Tomoha is showcased in a wonderful handmade cup from 15th generation Takatori kiln located a few blocs from our offices (we are lucky indeed !).

YOHEI - Competition Dento Hon Gyokuro

Regular price £42.00
/

Description

The fresh leaves of this competition-grade dento gyokuro were selected in tea fields in the Hoshino, Kuroki and Joyo districts of Yame by the skilled tea masters of Koga Seicha, strong with the experience of their 200-year history.

Its beautiful liquor offers an extraordinary tasting experience with a full flavor, low astringency, and rich color. High levels of caffeine round out this umami-filled blend, making it a fragrant delight to drink.

This exclusive Gyokuro, will develop distinct and complex notes at each brew. Starting from dark leafy greens and fresh nori intertwined with hints of toasted slivered almonds, to the fragrance of white spring flowers. The Umami will balance through out all steeps.

SATSUKI - Premium Dento Hon Gyokuro

Regular price £128.00
/

Description

With SATSUKI, we bring you one of the crown jewels of tea master Kiya san. Grown and handpicked in Yame, this dento Hon Gyokuro is an extraordinary blend of the rare and exceptional Kirari31 cultivar and the sweeter Saemidori, the two best cultivars for making gyokuro. Thanks to the skills of Kiya san, you will go on an unforgettable taste and flavor journey.

One of the main features of Kirari31 cultivar is the thicker mesophyll of its leaves that yields an exceptional level of rich and savory umami. The Saemidori cultivar brings floral and fruity notes to the cup. From the first sip, you will enjoy a savory broth-like feeling on your tongue, similar to traditional dashi soup, as well as edamame and chestnut notes. The round liquor will linger for a long while on your palate, with just the right level of astringency afterwards.

Up to five brews can be prepared with a gyokuro of such exceptional quality. We recommend following Kiya san’s steeping instructions for the first three brews.

If you’d like to learn more about Yame dento hon gyokuro, you can visit our special page about Gyokuro here as well as our Yame tea page. Please also watch the interview of Kiya san explaining about the parallels between green tea (especially gyokuro) and wine.

YANA - Premium Sencha

Regular price £20.00
/

Description

First flush (shincha 2023)

A blend of Yabukita and Sae-Midori cultivars, this exceptional first-flush sencha from Yame is a extraordinarily sweet delicacy with no bitterness. Thanks to high levels of umami, you will enjoy the full-bodied mouthfeel of its light-green colored liquor, as well as delicious and refreshing fragrance.

While it is not a fukamushi (deep-steamed) sencha, its leaves have nevertheless gone through a robust steaming process to enhance its mouthwatering scent.

YANA offers a range of aromas that is not fully revealed at first tasting. At first sight, prepared like a more classical sencha (80°C/30-60 seconds of infusion), it gives a strong umami taste, assertive and long in the mouth.

Brew it at a lower temperature (60°C/60 seconds) to let the palette of its aromas and its freshness express themselves more freely. This tea delivers an unequalled roundness, without any trace of bitterness, with fresh and slightly fruity notes.

Check out Melina's in-depth review of Yana here!

ICHIKO - Premium Matcha

Regular price £14.00
/

Description

We're thrilled to present ICHIKO—a fragrant, premium ceremonial-grade matcha from Sonogi (Nagasaki) crafted with Tsuyuhikari and Sae midori cultivars.

Before whisking ICHIKO, enjoy its emerald-green powder, its lightly sweet aroma boasting nutty and floral notes. Then to prepare, use 80C/176F water and 2g of powder to brew a silky, smooth matcha with hints of roasted almonds, flower notes, and robust umami. Its light astringency accentuates its sweet flavor.

Nakayama san, along with 3 tea producers, has blazed a path in Sonogi's tea industry by creating the first Sonogi-grown and made matcha. Hand-in-hand with a ceremonial-grade matcha master from Uji, they've created a unique matcha of Sonogi terroir.
