Kabusecha

Kabusecha means “covered tea”, a name that refers to the distinct shading process before harvest that enhances the tea’s natural sweetness and complexity. It sits between gyokuro and sencha in both method and taste, offering a balance of umami depth and refreshing clarity. If you enjoy the refreshing flavor of sencha and the sweet and umami taste of gyokuro, you will definitely appreciate kabusecha.

Discover the subtle strength of kabusecha green tea

What sets these three teas apart is their umami profile. Gyokuro delivers the deepest umami, followed by kabusecha, then sencha. This difference comes down to shading.

For kabusecha, tea bushes are covered for a shorter time, typically up to 10 days, compared to the 21 days for gyokuro. The shading is also lighter, with about 50% of sunlight blocked (versus 70–90% for gyokuro).

The result is a refined green tea that sits comfortably between sencha and gyokuro, both in palate and intricacy. With a smooth texture, vivid green color, and clean, sweet finish, kabusecha green tea is a favorite for those seeking depth without heaviness. It’s ideal for both seasoned tea drinkers and those just starting their journey with shaded Japanese teas.

Kabusecha is a delicious and fine tea, but it is quite rare, representing less than 5% of all green tea production in Japan. This rarity enhances its appeal for those looking to explore new expressions of shaded tea beyond the mainstream.

Tea producers who grow gyokuro also usually make kabusecha, so it is not surprising to see that in Kyushu, a lot of kabusecha comes from the Yame area.
